MPI successfully holds opening ceremony of the 2018/2019 academic year

The opening ceremony of the 2018/2019 academic year of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) was held in the afternoon of August 29 at the MPI Sports Pavilion, with more than 900 new students joining MPI. The solemnity of playing the national anthem took place during the opening ceremony. Two thousand participants including community leaders, representatives of scholarship donors, representatives from overseas universities, MPI teachers and students, alumni, and parents paid attention to the national flag raising, and all participants sang the national anthem to express their respect and pride to the motherland.

Im Sio Kei, the Acting President of MPI, presided at the opening ceremony and welcomed new students to the Macao Polytechnic Institute. He said that the Institute, while firmly adhering to the principle of “remaining rooted in Macao with love for our country and the local society, and serving the local society with an eye to the world”, will greet and grasp the opportunity to develop further, in line with the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” Plan and within the legal framework of Macao’s Regulation of Higher Education. MPI regularly receives the largest number of applications from Macao students; it has successfully passed a rigorous international institutional review, and it is ranked as a 4-Star High-Standard University in Greater China. For all of these achievements, the Institute owes its success to the optimism, resoluteness and solidarity of “MPI people”, as well as to the support from the Macao SAR Government and from all walks of life in Macao. Im Sio Kei encouraged the newcomers to carry on this tradition of academic excellence, broaden their horizon to the world, and make them prepared for job opportunities and ready for future contributions to regional or national development.

The teacher representative, Nie Jin Lei, encouraged the freshmen to truly understand and fulfil MPI's motto “Knowledge, expertise, global vision” in their four years of undergraduate study. He hoped that the students could enrich themselves and achieve success in the future by focusing on general education, grasping solid knowledge with professional expertise and skills, communicating and cooperating with people from different languages and cultural backgrounds, making good use of the advantages in MPI’s language teaching and in building good habits for physical exercise.

Mak Chi Man, the new students’ representative, said that MPI is an internationalised higher education institution, providing students with numerous exchange opportunities. She pledged to enrich her professional knowledge and sharpen her interpersonal and social skills. From the very first day of their undergraduate study, all students should make the most of the opportunities made available for them by the Institute, working hard both in class and out of class, transforming themselves into confident, respectful and responsible professionals for the future society.

All the MPI freshmen students at the opening ceremony solemnly and loudly swore their oath of “MPI's heart, our new start” to become a member of the MPI family. In line with the new growth and transformation, and assisting new students to adapt to campus life, MPI starts a series of orientation activities after the opening ceremony including campus orientation, welcome receptions for different majors, library survival skills workshops, mentorship programme, volunteer scheme, sharing session by outstanding MPI students, personality training camp, physical and mental fitness education workshop, basketball match, entrepreneur sharing and exploratory visit, life experience journey, as well as the orientation activities organised by the Macao Polytechnic Institute Student Union, to lay a solid foundation for students’ whole-person development.
