Consumer Report issue 301 features report on testing of impurities in 20 rice brands

No. 301 Consumer Report

The Consumer Council collaborates with the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) to test 20 rice samples for their contents of heavy metals and other impurities, the testing result is satisfactory, the testing report and a “Consumer Alert” are now published in the latest issue 301 Consumer Report, consumers may browse the contents on the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo).

The current test was conducted according to the standards of China, the United Nations, and Hong Kong regarding the limited contents of impurities in food products, meanwhile, the rice samples were also tested for their contents of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury that may affect the health of human beings.

All of the 20 tested samples are fit for all standards, the Consumer Council reminds consumers to purchase rice from licensed shops with good reputation, check the product label, and pay attention to the storing environment of rice products. The report of testing of impurities in rice and shopping tips from Food Safety Centre are now available in issue 301 of Consumer Report.

Accuracy of 8 fuel metres at petrol stations needs calibration

The Council finished testing fuel metres at local petrol stations earlier, the result shows that fuel metre samples from 7 of the 19 petrol stations did not meet the requirement of the national standard JJG443-2015 “Fuel Dispenser” due to error of indication and repeatability, another fuel dispenser shows that the metre starts running even when fuel has not been dispensed yet. The Council immediately informed the fuel companies to improve the accuracy of fuel metres, the relevant result has also been referred to the enforcing department, calibrations have been made and the detailed report is covered in Consumer Report.

Consumer alert: precautions for applying overseas tertiary educational programmes

The latest Consumer Report features a “Consumer Alert” regarding the precautions for applying overseas tertiary educational programmes. Consumers are reminded of problems leading to financial loss and even no certificate awarded after completion of programme.

The latest magazine also features on the work of the Consumer Council and introduces consumers the testing work of the Council, the assessment criteria of “Certified Shops”, and other recent activities.
