Cultural industries statistics 2017


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 2,088 organisations were operating in the four core domains of cultural industries in Macao in 2017, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media', representing an increase of 175 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged rose by 6.4% to 11,702, and Compensation of Employees went up by 7.3% to MOP 1.83 billion. Total Service Receipts of the cultural industries stood at MOP 7.08 billion, up by 4.8% year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy increased by 6.9% to MOP 2.38 billion, accounting for 0.6% of the total Gross Value Added of all economic activities of Macao in 2017, the same proportion as in 2016. Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the cultural industries amounted to MOP 0.46 billion, down by 3.1%.

There were 1,149 organisations operating in 'Creative design', an increase of 128 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 2.6% to 3,454, and Compensation of Employees amounted to MOP 0.48 billion, up by 12.2%. Service Receipts and Gross Value Added totalled MOP 2.09 billion and MOP 0.67 billion respectively in 2017, up by 15.8% and 10.6% year-on-year. Within this domain, the advertising industry generated the highest Service Receipts (MOP 0.86 billion), followed by architectural design (MOP 0.46 billion), representing growth of 9.4% and 14.9% respectively year-on-year. Meanwhile, Service Receipts of conference & exhibition organising services grew by 4.4% to MOP 0.40 billion.

Organisations engaging in 'Cultural exhibitions & performances' increased by 2 year-on-year to 220, with number of persons engaged rising by 1.0% to 2,454. Compensation of Employees amounted to MOP 0.31 billion, up by 6.6%. Service Receipts (MOP 1.44 billion) decreased by 1.3% year-on-year, with ticket sales accounting for 51.5% of the total. Gross Value Added totalled MOP 0.30 billion, up by 2.4%. In 2017, both the number of organisations operating in production of performing arts and their productions recorded growth. There were 159 operating organisations, up by 4 year-on-year, and number of persons engaged rose by 12.0% to 1,866. Service Receipts of these organisations took up 85.1% of the domain’s total, at MOP 1.22 billion. Gross Value Added dropped slightly by 0.5% to MOP 0.17 billion on account of increased operating costs during the year.

There were 107 organisations operating in 'Art collection', down by 3 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged (427) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 39.60 million) increased by 9.5% and 54.4% respectively. Service Receipts (MOP 0.11 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP 32.80 million) decreased by 17.5% and 38.3% respectively. Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 77.9% to MOP 5.30 million. Organisations engaging in creation and sale/auction of arts dropped by 2 year-on-year to 13, with number of persons engaged falling by 2.1% to 46. Service Receipts, Gross Value Added and Gross Fixed Capital Formation of these organisations amounted to MOP 32.50 million, MOP 16.10 million and MOP 2.10 million respectively. Meanwhile, organisations engaging in photography services decreased by 1 year-on-year to 94, whereas number of persons engaged increased by 11.1% to 381. Service Receipts (MOP 72.90 million) of these organisations rose by 23.0%, while Gross Value Added (MOP 16.70 million) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (MOP 3.20 million) slid by 22.5% and 4.0% respectively.

A total of 612 organisations were operating in 'Digital media', up by 48 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged increased by 11.6% to 5,367. Compensation of Employees totalled MOP 1.0 billion, up by 4.0%. Service Receipts and Gross Value Added of this domain amounted to MOP 3.44 billion and MOP 1.37 billion respectively, up by 2.4% and 8.1%. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation went down by 41.7% year-on-year to MOP 64.40 million. With the SAR Government’s efforts to promote the development of e-commerce, number of organisations engaging in the information industry rose by 18 year-on-year to 364, and number of persons engaged grew by 30.1% to 2,190. These organisations generated MOP 2.06 billion in Receipts and MOP 0.66 billion in Gross Value Added in 2017, up by 9.5% and 15.7% respectively.

Compilation of Cultural Industries Statistics is carried out by the Industries Statistics and Assessment Indicators Group under the Committee of Cultural Industries of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), in accordance with the framework for cultural industries statistics established based on the Policy Framework for the Development of Cultural Industries of the Macao SAR. In 2017, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) conducted a number of specialised surveys in the four domains of cultural industries, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media'. Survey results were combined with data collected from relevant industries surveys of DSEC to estimate the economic contribution of cultural industries in Macao.
