Greater Bay Area creates new impetus for Guangdong-Macao ties

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, meets with the Secretary of CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Mr Li Xi, and the Governor of Guangdong, Mr Ma Xingrui.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today said the outline development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area) had provided fresh impetus for Guangdong-Macao ties.

He believed Guangdong-Macao cooperation had a bright future, due to concerted effort from both sides in the pursuit of goals relating to the creation of a world-class city cluster.

Mr Chui shared today – during a meeting in Beijing with the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Mr Li Xi – his confident outlook regarding such bilateral ties.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed major areas of work in order to forge ahead with goals envisaged in the Greater Bay Area blueprint.

Transforming collectively the nine cities in Guangdong Province and the two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) into a word-class city cluster is a key goal set out in the outline development plan for the Greater Bay Area.

During the meeting, the Chief Executive spoke of Macao’s effort in that regard.

Macao had been accelerating its effort in preparing policies and measures to accommodate advancement of science, technology and innovation as well as infrastructure connectivity within the Greater Bay Area, said Mr Chui.

The Chief Executive stated that the Macao SAR Government had worked diligently to invigorate its internal workings in order to provide greater convenience to Macao residents working and living in other Greater Bay Area cities.

The Macao SAR Government would strive to provide more opportunities for Macao people and businesses to take part in the advancement of the Greater Bay Area, he added.

Speaking in today’s meeting, Mr Li said the Greater Bay Area initiative, put forward by President Xi Jinping, was a significant opportunity for the places involved, in terms of enhancing their economic development and optimising the well-being of their people.

He added that the Guangdong Government paid great attention to forging ahead with the plan’s implementation, and looked forward to working closely with the Macao SAR Government in setting out the next phase of work.

Macao officials attending today’s meeting included: the Director of the Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau, Mr Mi Jian; the Director of the Government Information Bureau, Mr Chan Chi Ping; the Director of the Protocol, Public Relations and External Affairs Office, Ms Lei Ut Mui; and the Director of the Representative Office of the Macao SAR in Beijing, Mr Leong Kit Chi.

Guangdong officials present at the meeting included the Governor Mr Ma Xingrui, and Executive Vice Governor Mr Lin Shaochun.
