UM honorary doctor Anthony Lau gives a talk on e-commerce logistics

Anthony Lau Siu Wing, an honorary doctor of the University of Macau (UM), today (5 March) gave a talk titled ‘E-Commerce Logistics’ at UM. The event attracted many UM faculty members and students, business people, as well as experts and scholars.

In his speech before the talk, Lionel Ni, acting rector of UM, praised Dr Lau for being a pioneer and veteran in the air cargo and logistics business. Dr Lau has spared no effort in promoting the development of the air cargo and logistics industry in Hong Kong. After graduating from the University of East Asia, the predecessor of UM, Lau has provided tremendous support to the university, as reflected in his donation to the University of Macau Development Foundation to support whole-person education at UM. He believes that one must commit oneself to lifelong learning in order to contribute to society.

During the talk, Dr Lau reviewed the major changes in e-commerce over the past decade, including the rise of e-commerce platforms and online adverting, and the emergence of virtual reality shopping, which have transformed buying behaviours and the logistics landscape. According to Dr Lau, the e-commerce market in China has been growing steadily, accounting for 67.1 per cent of the global e-commerce market in 2017. It is expected that by the year 2020, e-commerce sales on the Chinese market will exceed the combined sales in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, and France. Dr Lau also discussed the many opportunities brought about by the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as well as the implications for collaboration and development in the logistics industry.
