Demographic statistics for the 4th quarter of 2018


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population at end-2018 increased by 14,300 year-on-year to 667,400, with the female population accounting for 53.1% of the total. The proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year to 11.1%, whereas that of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 1.0 percentage point to 75.7%. The population of Macao continued to age, with the ageing ratio rising by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to 84.1%, representing the 22nd consecutive year of increase.

Local population, excluding non-resident workers and foreign students living in Macao, went up by 1.6% year-on-year to 548,200, and 53.2% of them were female. The elderly (aged 65 and over) took up 13.5% of the total while the youth (aged 0-14) constituted 16.1%. The elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 19.2%, indicating that about 5 adults supported 1 elderly person.

In 2018, a total of 5,925 live births were delivered, down by 604 year-on-year, and the birth rate fell by 1.1 per mille points to 9.0‰. The sex ratio of newborns was 117.2, corresponding to 117.2 male babies per 100 female babies. Meanwhile, mortality decreased by 51 year-on-year to 2,069 in 2018, with 56.6% being males; the mortality rate was 3.1‰, down by 0.2 per mille points. Mortality from Malignant neoplasms (817) was the highest, accounting for 39.5% of the total deaths, while mortality from Cerebrovascular diseases (190) and Pneumonia (181) made up 9.2% and 8.7% respectively.

Non-resident workers totalled 188,480 at end-2018, up by 9,024 year-on-year. There were 53,063 non-resident workers engaging in Hotels, restaurants & similar activities, an increase of 1,894; moreover, non-resident workers in the Construction sector totalled 30,128, similar to the figure at end-2017. Chinese immigrants saw a decline for the third consecutive year, falling by 674 year-on-year to 3,532 in 2018; among them, 2,262 came from Guangdong Province, down by 604. Females accounted for 65.1% of the Chinese immigrants. Meanwhile, number of individuals granted right of abode dropped by 453 year-on-year to 1,074.

A total of 3,842 cases of marriage registration were recorded in 2018, down by 1.1% year-on-year. Median age at first marriage was 29.2 for the bridegrooms and 27.6 for the brides, up by 0.4 year and 0.1 year respectively. Number of divorce cases went up by 65 year-on-year to 1,544, of which divorce by mutual consent took up 94.2%.

At end-2018, number of households totalled 194,400, up by 2,900 year-on-year.
