Rain, set to Steve Reich’sMusic for 18 Musicians(1976), is one of the most mesmerising choreographies createdby the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Heralded as one of the pioneers in the contemporary dance world, De Keersmaeker returns to two of her great loves in this seminal work: pure dance and minimalistic music. Driven by the pulsating tones by Steve Reich, nine dancers travel across the stage with agility, performing infinite variations of physical freedom and geometrical precision with breathtaking lightness. The mathematical figures, the sustained repetition, the geometric occupation of the space, the art of continuous variation –everything that gradually became the choreographer’s signature is pushed to the extreme inRain.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s company Rosas is one of the leading contemporary dance companies in the world. De Keersmaeker has been honoured bynumerousprestigious awards including the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011, as well as the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance by La Biennale di Venezia in 2015.
