Transport and communications statistics for October 2019


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 239,631 as at end-October 2019, a slight increase of 0.4% year-on-year. Light automobiles (108,837) and heavy motorcycles (99,295) rose by 1.2% and 2.3% respectively, whereas light motorcycles (24,171) went down by 8.5%. New registration of motor vehicles in October dropped by 3.8% year-on-year to 974, with heavy motorcycles (437) reducing by 17.9% while light automobiles (510) rising by 13.8%. In the first ten months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 14.9% year-on-year to 10,129. Number of traffic accidents went down by 11.5% year-on-year to 1,034 in October, involving 343 victims and 1 of them was killed. In the first ten months, there were 11,272 traffic accidents which resulted in 3,722 casualties, including 8 deaths.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in October increased by 12.4% year-on-year to 474,294 trips. Vehicular trips passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (144,899) rose by 7.7%, whereas those going through the Border Gate (278,676) dropped by 1.4%; besides, there were 47,639 trips crossing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first ten months of 2019, cross-border vehicular traffic went up by 9.2% year-on-year to 4,436,482 trips. Arrivals and departures of commercial flights at the Macau International Airport totalled 6,098 trips in October, a growth of 13.0% year-on-year; trips to and from mainland China (2,565) and Taiwan (1,070) showed respective increases of 20.4% and 5.2%. Arrivals and departures of commercial flights in the first ten months grew by 19.0% year-on-year to 60,823 trips.

Gross weight of containerized cargo by land in October soared by 101.0% year-on-year to 2,455 tonnes, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai amounted to 2,422 tonnes (98.7% of total), an upsurge of 138.4%. Meanwhile, gross weight of port containerized cargo decreased by 23.9% to 11,850 tonnes, with cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (5,913 tonnes) and the Ká-Hó Harbour (5,937 tonnes) falling by 22.1% and 25.6% respectively year-on-year. In the first ten months, gross weight of containerized cargo by land surged by 35.2% year-on-year to 16,665 tonnes, while that of port containerized cargo reduced by 12.2% to 123,296 tonnes.

The Macau International Airport handled 4,144 tonnes of air cargo in October, up by 3.9% year-on-year; gross weight of inward cargo (659 tonnes) and outward cargo (2,868 tonnes) grew by 7.4% and 5.5% respectively, while that of transit cargo (617 tonnes) decreased by 6.0%. In the first ten months, air cargo rose by 1.3% year-on-year to 32,517 tonnes.

As at the end of October 2019, there were 117,438 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 6.6% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers edged up 0.4% to 2,262,205 year-on-year. Internet subscribers rose by 7.6% to 580,015 and the duration of internet usage in October increased by 24.5% to 138 million hours. Total duration of internet usage stood at 1.31 billion hours in the first ten months, a growth of 26.4% year-on-year.
