The DSEJ and representatives of education sector discussing relevant educational work after the class resumption of primary and secondary schools

The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (hereinafter referred to as the “DSEJ”), the representatives of the Chinese Educators’ Association of Macau and the Union of Catholic Schools of Macau have met regularly to discuss all the work related to class suspension and resumption due to the epidemic. On 27th May, director Lou Pak Sang and department heads of the DSEJ held a meeting with the representatives of the above-mentioned associations to conclude the experience they have accumulated in class resumption so as to better prepare for the class resumption of Primary 1 to Primary 3 on 1st June. Besides, they also actively discussed the arrangements for infant education and special education.

Pupils of infant education and special education will not return to schools for this academic year. Schools can continue to provide caring services to pupils through the "friendly measures". Besides, it is discussed that schools can flexibly arrange K3 pupils to return to their school at a specific time in July. Children can meet their classmates and teachers or take a group photo together. As to the closing and graduation ceremonies at various educational stages, schools can continue to hold them, subject to conditions that they comply with the relevant epidemic prevention requirements and the capacity of the venue. If the venue fails to accommodate parents, schools can arrange parents to watch the ceremonies by means of videos. The activities for expressing gratitude to teachers can be simplified and carried out in a different form, subject to following the relevant epidemic prevention requirements.

In addition, according to the information of the DSEJ as at 26th May, 91.3% of senior secondary schools, 87.2% of junior secondary schools, 78.0% of primary schools will end the school year in second half of July. The distribution of the end date of the school year at each educational stage is shown in the table below.

Besides, the DSEJ also introduced the future trends in school places in Macao to the participants. In order to address the short-term shortage of school places in the future, schools need to give full play to the mechanism for adjusting the class size in the free education system. At the same time, the two sides also discussed the issue about teaching staff’s provident fund offsetting. The DSEJ stated that it would release the relevant guidelines as soon as possible within this school year.

Representatives of the two educational organisations attending the meeting stated that they would continue to ensure smooth resumption of classes at all educational stages, actively cooperate with the DSEJ on its guidelines, improve school provident fund system and provide sufficient school places for children.
