Transport and communications statistics for April 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 244,327 as at end-April 2021, up by 1.9% year-on-year. Light automobiles (111,711) and heavy motorcycles (103,453) grew by 2.1% and 3.7% year-on-year respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in April rose by 13.3% year-on-year to 971, with that of light automobiles (461) surging by 60.6% whereas that of heavy motorcycles (483) falling by 13.1%. In the first four months of 2021, new registration of motor vehicles increased by 40.7% year-on-year to 4,477. Number of traffic accidents in April totalled 1,022, with 377 persons injured. In the first four months of 2021, there were 4,097 traffic accidents, which caused 1,394 injuries.

Cross-border vehicular traffic in April 2021 soared by 733.7% year-on-year to 381,069 trips, attributable to a boost of 1,499.8% in light automobile trips (352,556); besides, heavy truck trips (26,805) grew by 13.4%. Meanwhile, gross weight of containerized cargo by land rose by 6.9% year-on-year to 2,317 tonnes, with 2,214 tonnes (95.5% of total) passing through the Checkpoint of Macao Port Administration Area of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first four months of 2021, cross-border vehicular traffic (1,430,457 trips) and gross weight of containerized cargo by land (8,489 tonnes) increased by 76.3% and 17.2% year-on-year respectively.

Gross weight of port containerized cargo grew by 77.6% year-on-year to 13,599 tonnes in April; cargo being handled at the Inner Harbour (9,627 tonnes) and the Ká-Hó Harbour (3,972 tonnes) expanded by 40.1% and 406.5% respectively. In the first four months of 2021, gross weight of port containerized cargo went up by 37.9% year-on-year to 47,007 tonnes.

Arriving and departing commercial flights totalled 1,418 trips in April, an upsurge of 775.3% year-on-year. Air cargo leapt by 176.4% year-on-year to 4,187 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (483 tonnes) and outward cargo (3,680 tonnes) lifted by 268.9% and 168.3% respectively. In the first four months of 2021, number of arriving and departing commercial flights fell by 51.1% year-on-year to 4,193 trips, while air cargo rose by 58.8% to 12,572 tonnes.

As at the end of April, there were 104,617 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 7.9% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers decreased by 39.0% year-on-year to 1,291,799, ascribable to a 65.1% drop in prepaid SIM card subscribers (456,340). In April, internet subscribers rose by 5.7% year-on-year to 641,810. Total duration of internet usage in April went up by 1.6% year-on-year to 138 million hours, whereas the duration in the first four months of 2021 dropped by 1.1% to 534 million hours.
