MSAR Government resolutely rejects remarks by U.S. Department of State on Macao’s Legislative Assembly Election

The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government resolutely rejects remarks made lately by a spokesperson for the United States Department of State, concerning the Legislative Assembly Election of the MSAR.

The decision of the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election to exclude some individuals from the upcoming election has its basis in a power vested with the Commission under the Legislative Assembly Election Law. Such decision has been confirmed in a ruling by the Court of Final Appeal of the MSAR.

The Legislative Assembly Election is purely an internal affair of Macao, and no foreign institution has the right to interfere in it.

The MSAR Government will, as always, guarantee the enjoyment by Macao residents of fundamental rights and freedom of speech. The MSAR Government will support the Electoral Affairs Commission in exercising its duties in line with the law, to ensure procedures for the upcoming Legislative Assembly Election run smoothly.
