Demographic statistics for the 2nd quarter of 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population as at end-June 2021 was 682,500, the same as in the previous quarter; female population (363,800) accounted for 53.3% of the total.

A total of 1,299 live births were delivered in the second quarter of 2021, an increase of 126 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 683 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 110.9, corresponding to 110.9 male babies per 100 female babies. In the first half of 2021, a total of 2,472 live births were recorded, down by 320 year-on-year.

Mortality decreased by 35 quarter-to-quarter to 554 in the second quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (211), Diseases of the Circulatory System (120) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (83). In the first half of 2021, mortality totalled 1,143, an increase of 56 year-on-year.

In the second quarter of 2021, new arrivals from mainland China with one-way permit (661), non-resident workers at end-period (172,261) and individuals granted right of abode (117) went down by 14, 852 and 7 respectively quarter-to-quarter. In the first half of 2021, new arrivals from mainland China with one-way permit (1,336) increased by 317 year-on-year, while individuals granted right of abode (241) decreased by 144.

A total of 809 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the second quarter, down by 164 quarter-to-quarter. In the first half of 2021, there were 1,782 cases of marriage registration, up notably by 436 year-on-year.
