The Public Art Exhibition of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021”, themed “Technology of Well-being”, aims to encourage people to explore the meaning of happiness. Several distinctive artworks are exhibited in public spaces of the city, in combination with other sections of “Art Macao” to bring an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden. The public artwork “Gathering” is now on display in the Art Plaza of the Macao Cultural Centre, where the public can navigate between the adjacent mega panorama “Learning from Macao” and the Main Exhibition at the Macao Museum of Art in an art tour destination in the coming autumn.
“Gathering”, a giant bronze sculpture by renowned artist Su Xinping from Mainland China, features a pair of huge hands in surreal dimensions. With a figurative expression and a perspective view from a relatively low horizontal line of sight, it creates a mountain-like shape which leaves viewers admired by its infinity and immensity. Viewers will find themselves in a non-secular spiritual world from the reverence generated by looking up to the images in the work. The work was evolved from a series of sketches. Through the transformation from two-dimension to three-dimension, a world of continuous fracture and reunion is unfolded in modern dislocated time and space, and a real visual logic is stimulated by the individual artistic will.
“Learning from Macao”, a mega panorama by the Drawing Architecture Studio from Beijing, is now displayed on the exterior wall of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. Inspired by the observations of the city’s actual architecture and daily life, the customized work incorporates elements of simple lines and riotous colours to create an unprecedented and vibrant urban panorama, including a number of local landmarks, to pay tribute to local culture.
In addition, the third section of the Main Exhibition “Advance and Retreat of Globalization”, is held at the Macao Museum of Art until October 17, in which the participating artists depict different sceneries of challenge, dilemma, hesitation, illusion and anxiety that humanity faces in the process of globalization by means of airports, globes, navigation systems, satellites, aerial imaged and social media messages during the pandemic, creating hope and possibilities for people to overcome the adversities together, through new spiritual and emotional paths, in times of despair.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021” strictly follows the relevant guidelines of the Health Bureau and implements appropriate measures, with visitor capacity limited to 50% of the pre-pandemic level. The public is advised to visit the cultural facilities at different times. All visitors must wear their face masks, undergo body temperature checks, present a valid “Macao Health Code” of the day upon entry, and follow crowd control measures onsite. After entering the venues, the members of the public should maintain social distancing and appropriate personal hygiene. Admission to all activities is free.
