Consumer Report issue no. 337

To safeguard consumers’ health, the Consumer Council and the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) collaborated and tested 30 samples of bottled drinking water, the current test has been included in the annual collaboration plan.

No unusual findings in 30 samples of bottled drinking water

The 30 samples of bottled drinking water tested this year include different volumes of distilled water, mineral water and sparkling water, all samples pass the hygiene and quality guidelines on bottled drinking water of the Department of Food Safety. Testing criteria include appearance, colour, turbidity, contents of all kinds of chemical substances, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, etc..

Consumers should pay attention to the expiry date printed on the bottle and peruse ingredients information on the label when purchasing bottled drinking water, and stop drinking when any odour or foreign matter is found.

First meeting of new General Committee

A feature on the first meeting of the new General Committee of the Consumer Council held on 10th September is included in the latest Consumer Report. Ho Pui Fan is elected President of the Committee and recent work projects were reported on the meeting.

According to the Dispatch of the Secretary for Economy and Finance no. 59/2021 published in Series II, no. 30 of the Official Gazette, the appointments of Ho Pui Fan, Lee Koi Ian, Au Thien Yn, Wong Hing Tim Frederick, Kuong Chi Fong, Kuan Fan Kit, Lam Ines Tek Yan, Cheng Wing Yiu Daniel and Au Ka Fai are renewed for two years starting 25 August 2021, Ao Sio Peng and Regina Ng are also appointed as members of the General Committee for two years.

Shops to contend as “Best Certified Shops”

The “Certified Shops” mechanism has been renewed and “Best Certified Shops” are introduced this year to encourage “Certified Shops” to enhance their service quality. Shops from all industries respond to the award and over 200 shops applied to contend in the award that chooses shops as the final “Best Certified Shops”.

The 40 elected shops include those from food & beverage industry, jewelery, dried seafood, and electronic products, etc. and each is awarded a certificate of merit. These shops are included in the second selection phase to be evaluated and the final top 20 will be elected “Best Certified Shops”.

The latest Consumer Report also includes a testing report on medical face masks conducted by the Consumer Council and the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) earlier, a “Consumer Alert” is also included to remind consumers to confirm the status of the seller as a trader during online shopping.
