Cultural industries statistics 2020


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 2,483 organisations were operating in the four core domains of cultural industries in Macao in 2020, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media'; the figure represented an increase of 28 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged dropped by 13.4% to 11,862, and Compensation of Employees decreased by 4.8% to MOP 2.11 billion. Total Service Receipts of the cultural industries declined by 36.9% to MOP 5.0 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy fell by 27.9% to MOP 2.14 billion, accounting for 1.1% of the total Gross Value Added of all economic activities in Macao in 2020, up by of 0.4 percentage points from 2019 (0.7%). Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the cultural industries slid by 35.7% to MOP 0.39 billion, ascribable to the sale of property and a decrease in the purchase of equipment by some organisations.

There were 1,377 organisations operating in 'Creative design', a decrease of 21 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged went down by 15.8% to 3,895, and Compensation of Employees dropped by 20.0% to MOP 0.51 billion. Service Receipts and Gross Value Added totalled MOP 1.79 billion and MOP 0.62 billion respectively in 2020, down by 29.9% and 28.8%. Within this domain, Service Receipts of organisations engaged in architectural design (MOP 0.54 billion), the advertising industry (MOP 0.52 billion) and specialised design (MOP 0.40 billion) dipped by 8.4%, 41.7% and 5.0% respectively.

A total of 308 organisations were operating in 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', up by 27 year-on-year; number of persons engaged decreased by 13.7% to 2,627. Compensation of Employees amounted to MOP 0.49 billion, a rise of 21.5%. Service Receipts of this domain slid by 64.5% to MOP 0.51 billion, with ticket sales accounting for 12.0% of the total. Gross Value Added shrank by 40.6% to MOP 0.15 billion. Number of organisations operating in production of performing arts went up by 17 year-on-year to 210, while number of persons engaged dropped by 18.7% to 1,863. Service Receipts of this industry comprised 55.9% (MOP 0.29 billion) of the domain’s total. Gross Value Added of the industry slumped by 92.0% to MOP 13.10 million, dragged down by a decline of 76.5% in Service Receipts.

Organisations operating in 'Art collection' increased by 1 year-on-year to 139, whereas number of persons engaged dropped by 12.4% to 466. Compensation of Employees dipped by 23.0% to MOP 28.83 million. Service Receipts (MOP 68.84 million) and Gross Value Added (MOP 20.63 million) of this domain went down by 39.8% and 43.9% respectively. Moreover, Gross Fixed Capital Formation fell by 40.3% to MOP 3.96 million. Number of organisations engaged in creation, sale and auction of arts decreased by 2 year-on-year to 21, with 67 persons engaged. Service Receipts of these organisations shrank by 30.6% to MOP 11.94 million. Gross Value Added tumbled by 73.2% to MOP 1.87 million and Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 30.2% to MOP 1.60 million. Meanwhile, organisations engaged in photography services went up by 3 year-on-year to 118, while number of persons engaged reduced by 8.9% to 399. Service Receipts of these organisations totalled MOP 56.90 million, down by 41.4% year-on-year. Gross Value Added slid by 37.1% to MOP 18.76 million and Gross Fixed Capital Formation dropped by 45.6% to MOP 2.37 million.

There were 659 organisations operating in 'Digital media', up by 21 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged decreased by 11.2% to 4,874 while Compensation of Employees went down by 5.0% to MOP 1.07 billion. Service Receipts of this domain declined by 31.2% to MOP 2.63 billion and Gross Value Added shrank by 25.4% to MOP 1.35 billion. In addition, Gross Fixed Capital Formation dived by 46.5% to MOP 80.70 million. Number of organisations operating in the information industry increased by 12 year-on-year to 398, while number of persons engaged dropped by 8.4% to 2,105. Service Receipts of this industry fell by 32.7% to MOP 1.50 billion and Gross Value Added slipped by 27.2% to MOP 0.70 billion.

Compilation of Cultural Industries Statistics is carried out by the Industries Statistics and Assessment Indicators Group under the Committee of Cultural Industries of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), in accordance with the framework for cultural industries statistics established based on the Policy Framework for the Development of Cultural Industries of the Macao SAR (2014-2019). In 2020, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) conducted a number of specialised surveys in the four domains of cultural industries, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media'. Survey results were combined with data collected from relevant industries surveys of DSEC to estimate the economic contribution of cultural industries in Macao.
