Returning to Macao with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the celebrated conductor Valery Gergiev is leading two symphonic feasts, exulting Russia’s passionate culture with dashes of French lyricism. Focusing on a unique blend of great composers, the first concert delves into a startling display of contrasts with powerfull works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. On the second date, the orchestra invites us for a balletic evening, evoking more delicate sensations, from Debussy’s symphonic poem Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun to Rachmaninoff’s epic memories of Russia, closing with a folkloric tale by Stravinsky.
As a symbol of St Petersburg and Russia itself, the orchestra’s long-standing history dates back to the mid-18th century and has long been a synonym for artistic prowess. Under Gergiev’s artistic direction since 1988, the institution has renewed its international relevance. Adept at spotless renderings of Russian masterpieces, the orchestra is also known by its eclectic repertoire, consistently impressing melomanes with emotive and dramatic performances.
