Registration of Driving Licences Issued by HKSAR or Those Listed in Article 80 of the Road Traffic Law

Service targets and application eligibility

  1. Holders of international driving licences or overseas driving licences of like effect (which are recognized in Macao) issued by contracting parties to the Convention on Road Traffic [please browse the webpage of the Transport Bureau for details] who wish to continue to drive in Macao after staying in the SAR for 14 days (with valid limit of stay). (Registration is not required for holders staying for less than 14 days)
  2. Applicants must be aged 18 or above.

Documents to be presented

HK driving licence holders

  1. Original of Valid HKSAR driving licence
  2. Original of valid HKSAR Identity Card (or Macao Resident Identity Card)
  3. Original of valid arrival card (not applicable to Macao residents)
  4. If the Hong Kong driving licence is not the one obtained with driving test in Hong Kong, the holder is required to produce the original valid identity document used for applying for the driving licence by direct issue without test.

Overseas / International driving licence holders

  1. Original of valid overseas/international driving licence
  2. Original of valid passport, travel document or Non-resident Worker’s Identification Card (or Macao BIR)
  3. Original of valid arrival card (not applicable to Macao residents)

Remarks

  1. A person who stays in Macao for more than 14 days and drive without registration is subject to a fine of MOP300;
  2. The registration validity period is based on the limit of stay in Macao and the validity of the driving licence of the person. In general the normal validity period for holders of Macao BIR or Non-resident Worker’s Identification Cards is six months;
  3. A person holding the document(s) as stipulated in Article 80(1)(1)-(3) of the Road Traffic Law is entitled to drive in the Macao SAR for up to one year;
  4. A Macao resident with a driving licence issued by a contracting party to the Convention on Road Traffic may apply for direct issue of a driving licence issued by the Transport Bureau within one year from the first day of residence in Macao or the first day of entry into Macao after obtaining the aforesaid driving licence; [Please browse the webpage of the Transport Bureau for details]
  5. “Quality indicator” refers to the time required for processing (excluding queuing time and mailing time) which is calculated from the moment the service unit receives and confirms that all the required documents are in order.
