World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition award ceremony soon to be held in recognition of excellent translators worldwide

The award ceremony of the ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’, jointly organised by the Tertiary Education Services Office and Macao Polytechnic Institute, will soon be held

The award ceremony of the ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’ will be held at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 9 August. Jointly organised by the Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES) and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), with the Language Big Data Alliance as the supporting unit, the competition aims to enhance the exchange of Chinese-Portuguese translation techniques between students of higher education institutions around the world, to train Chinese-Portuguese translation professionals, and to further promote the application of advances in Chinese-Portuguese translation teaching and research in Macao, the Chinese Mainland and the Lusophone countries according to the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. Academics and experts in the field of Portuguese teaching and research from Brazil, Portugal, the Chinese Mainland and Macao, as well as university students and teachers participating in this competition, will be present at the ceremomy.

The ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’ is strongly supported by various entities both locally and abroad. The honorary committee of the competition is chaired by Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary for Social and Cultural Affairs of the Macao SAR Government, while its Vice-chairman is Professor Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, former Deputy Director-general of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration and Co-chair of the Language Big Data Alliance. Members of this committee include heads and renowned academics of the University of Lisbon, the University of Coimbra and Leiria Polytechnic Institute (Portugal), as well as a representative from Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd (Beijing).

The competition attracted 87 teams from 27 higher education insitutions in Brazil, Portugal, the Chinese Mainland and Macao. Each team consists of two to three students who may appoint a coach from the same higher education institution. Each team was required to translate Chinese source texts comprising 10,000 sentences from either articles or books provided by the organisers. Participants were given three months to translate these given texts into Portuguese.

The award ceremony of the ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’ will be held at 3pm on 9 August in Lecture Theatre 1 on the first floor of MPI’s Wui Chi Building.
