Macao adapts strategies to cater for low cost carriers

Macao plans to adapt its aviation strategies to cater for the mushrooming growth of low cost carriers and to make Macao Airport the airport of their choice, Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Mr Ao Man Long, said today. Speaking to local and overseas representatives from aviation and tourism sectors during a symposium focusing on low-cost carriers, Mr Ao said the potential for low cost carriers growth in Asia was tremendous and the trend would link Macao to a new pool of tourists, as well as create new markets of travellers taking frequent but short holidays in the region. ‘’Macao’s aviation industry and tourism numbers are set to grow in tandem with the region. Last year, Macao Airport welcomed 3.7 million passengers through its doors. Macao had more that 16 million tourists last year,’’ he said. “Our aviation strategy has served us well over the past few years. However, the winds of change are upon us and we must adapt our strategies to take into account the changing landscape.” Mr Ao said that the emergence of low cost carriers, which enabled many people to travel at more affordable fares, had expanded the air travel pie and opened up new and potentially huge market segments. ‘’Governments, airports and established airlines have to adapt rapidly to the changes brought about by low-cost carriers,” said Mr Ao. “Macao Airport also has to adjust quickly to cater to the needs of both established and low cost carriers. ‘’Our commitment to create sound operating conditions for all carriers remains a constant and unwavering philosophy,’’ he said.” “We have to work together to ensure that Asia’s aviation sector as a whole is ready for the phenomenal growth.”
