Results of Employment Survey for May – July 2005


According to the results of the Employment Survey released by the Statistics and Census Service, unemployment rate for May - July 2005 remained at 4.2%, identical to the rate recorded in April - June 2005, but decreased by 0.7 percentage point over the same period of 2004. The underemployment rate was 1.5%, down by 0.1 and 0.6 percentage point over April - June 2005 and the same period of 2004 respectively. Number of the unemployed searching for their first job was about 1,200, or 12.1% of the total unemployed population, an increase of 4.2 percentage points over April - June 2005. Compared with April - June 2005, unemployment situation was improved in the Real estate, renting & business activities and Construction sectors, while it was worsened in Other community, social & personal service activities (except Gaming) and Restaurants & similar activities. Total labour force was estimated at 245,000 in May - July 2005; the employed and the unemployed populations were 235,000 and 10,000 respectively. Labour force participation rate was 62.6%, up by 0.4 and 1.1 percentage points compared with April - June 2005 and the same period of 2004 respectively.
