(Macao – 7 September 2000) The Chief Executive, Mr Edmund Ho Hau Wah, today met the Vice Premier, Ms Wu Yi, in Xiamen before the opening ceremony of the First Forum on West Coast Economic Zone of Taiwan Strait, being held in the Fujian city. Mr Ho also met the Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Mr Luo Haocai. The Chief Executive was in the provincial capital to attend the trade event, where he delivered a speech on the advantages of the economic zone and Macao’s role as a business platform. He said the strategy of developing the West Coast Economic Zone of Taiwan Strait was fully supported by the Central Government, which highlighted Fujian’s crucial role in promoting exchanges across the Strait, as well as the process of the re-unification of the motherland. He also praised the coastal province for enjoying a favourable geographical position. As for co-operation between Macao and Fujian, Mr Ho said Macao would provide excellent services to enhance links between enterprises in the West Coast Economic Zone of Taiwan Strait and those from the Portuguese-speaking countries. Mr Ho said he was looking forward to the increase of exchanges between the business sectors of Macao and Fujian, he said. He also invited the participants to come to Macao later this month for the 2nd Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao).
