Smoking control consultation paper out in September

The government is to introduce a string of measures aimed at curbing smoking, to protect people against second hand smoke and to safeguard public health. According to a statement issued by the Health Bureau, a consultation paper will be distributed to the public in September, giving the people one month to comment on the proposed measures. The public could also download the document from the Health Bureau website (www.ssm.gov.mo). Measures to be revised would include an increase in the duty on tobacco, extending no-smoking areas, strengthening control on tobacco advertisements, sponsorships and commercial information, and intensifying the control on the sale of tobacco products. Smoking is one of the most dangerous health risk factors and exposure to tobacco smoke could impair human systems and organs, causing disability and death. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which is a global trend to help prevent people from taking up smoking, came into force on 27 February 2005. The FCTC applies to the Macao SAR, in accordance with the Chief Executive Notice No. 15/2006 of 29 March 2006.
