Prime Minister of Portugal arrives in Macao


The Prime Minister of Portugal, Mr José Sócrates, arrived in Macao today on a two-day official visit. Upon his arrival, he said he was glad to see the rapid development in Macao and he hoped the visit would further deepen relations between Portugal and Macao. He was welcomed by the Secretary for Administration and Justice, Ms Florinda Chan; Portugal¡¦s Consul-General in Hong Kong and Macao, Mr Pedro Moitinho de Almeida; and the Director of the Macao Economic and Trade Office to the European Union, Mr Raimundo Arrais do Rosario. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Macao¡¦s Chief Executive, Mr Edmund Ho Hau Wah, and attend a luncheon hosted by the Macao SAR Government. He is also scheduled to attend a trade promotion forum, visit the University of Macau, the Macau Tower, the Portuguese School of Macao, the Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR), and Portugal¡¦s Consulate General in Macao. Members of his delegation include the Minister of State and Minister for Finance, Mr Fernando Teixeira dos Santos; the Minister for Economy and Innovation, Mr Manuel Pinho; the Minister for Public Works, Transport and Communications, Mr Mário Lino; and the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Mr Manuel Heitor. Mr Sócrates is visiting China at the invitation of China¡¦s Premier, Mr Wen Jiabao. He had visited Beijing and Shanghai, and Macao is the last stop on this visit.
