Results of the Employment Survey for May-July 2009


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that attributable to the increasing number of job-seekers in the Summer Holiday, both the unemployment rate (3.7%) and the underemployment rate (1.9%) for May-July 2009 rose slightly by 0.1 percentage point compared with the previous period (April-June); meanwhile, the labour force participation rate went up by 0.2 percentage point from the previous period. Total labour force was 332,700 in May-July 2009, with an employed population of 320,400 and the number of the unemployed totalling 12,300. Among the unemployed, 11.4% (1,400) were fresh labour force entrants searching for the first job, up by 2.0 percentages points over the previous period. Analyzed by industry, the number of persons working in the Construction Sector dropped further, while employment of the Wholesale & Retail Trade; and Real Estate & Business Activities registered an increase. In comparison with May-July 2008, the unemployment rate and the underemployment rate went up by 0.8 and 0.3 percentage point respectively, while the labour force participation rate fell by 0.2 percentage point.
