Demographic Statistics for the Second Quarter of 2009


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the population of Macao was estimated at 544,200 as at 30 June 2009, down by 2,000 from end-March, attributable to the decrease of non-resident workers. In the second quarter of 2009, there were 1,039 live births, down by 7.0% quarter-to-quarter, with male babies accounting for 52.0% (540). The number of mortality cases totalled 386 and the major causes of death were Neoplasms and Diseases of the Circulatory System. Meanwhile, no fetal mortality case was recorded. The Health Bureau received 1,244 cases of Notifiable diseases in this quarter, consisting mainly of Hand, Foot and Mouth Diseases (528 cases), Varicella (chickenpox) (270 cases) and Influenza (149 cases); moreover, 33 cases of Influenza A/H1N1 (Swine flu) were recorded. In addition, 731 cases of marriage registration were recorded, up by 15.1% over the first quarter of 2009. In the second quarter of 2009, there were 615 immigrants moving from Mainland China to Macao with One-way Exit Permit, quarter-to-quarter increase slightly of 1.7% (10); meanwhile, 454 illegal immigrants were repatriated. Moreover, a total of 2,238 individuals were authorized to reside in Macao, up by 650 quarter-to-quarter. Number of non-resident workers totalled 83,616 at the end of the second quarter, a decrease of 4,173 over the end of the first quarter of 2009.
