Macao strengthens bilateral co-operation with Peru


The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today met with the visiting President of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Mr Fredy Otárola, and exchanged views on bilateral co-operation. The meeting took place at Government Headquarters where Mr Chui welcomed the Peru delegation and gave them an update on the latest developments in Macao. Mr Chui said a delegation of Peruvian congressmen had met with Macao's tourism officials and exchanged ideas on co-operation on a visit to Macao last year. He said he believed that Mr Otárola's visit would open up more areas for co-operation. Mr Otárola said the relationship between Peru and China was good and they regarded China as the first business and trading partner. Meanwhile Peru is pursuing to attract more international investments in the country. The President said Peru is a country with rich resources and has sundry agricultural products; tourism in Peru is distinctive, such as the famous Machu Picchu which attracts millions of visitors. Currently, they intend to develop tourism and entertainment industries near Lima, the capital. Peru and Macao would enhance co-operation on mining, importation of agricultural products and tourism, said the President. On behalf of the Republic of Peru, he invited Mr Chui to visit Peru with a delegation for a better understanding of the country. Mr Chui agreed the importance of tighter mutual co-operation, and stressed that besides tourism and trade, both sides would step up cultural co-operation to facilitate contacts with Latin-speaking countries. Moreover, the Peru Chamber of Commerce in Macao may provide the bridge for entrepreneurs of Macao and Peru. Ms Florinda Chan, who was also at the meeting, also exchanged views on importation of agricultural products from Peru and food safety in Macao. Also present in the meeting were Peru Congressmen Mr José León Rivera, Mr Rolando Reátegui, the Consul General of Peru in Hong Kong and Macao Mr David Málaga, the President of the Peru Chamber of Commerce in Macao Mr Luís Lui, the Chief-of-Cabinet of the Office of the Chief Executive Mr Tam Chon Weng; the Secretary-General of the Executive Council Ms O Lam.
