MIECF´s Role as a Green Platform is Widely Recognized

Hosted by the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region, co-ordinated by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), the 2015 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2015MIECF) will be held at The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel from 26th to 28th March 2015. The 8th MIECF will be held under the theme “Green Economy – Solutions for Clean Air”, advocating “Thinking Green, Going Clean, Living Cool”. Through various activities, the event aims to continue to develop as a platform to promote green business and technology and information exchange between the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region and the international market. Since its inception in 2008, the quality of the activities held under MIECF has been continuously enhanced to provide opportunities for in-depth discussions on issues related to the development of the environmental sector, while endeavouring to facilitate business matching and negotiations, in a bid to promote exchange and co-operation between enterprises. Last year, the number of visitors was approximately over 9,000. After years of development, the role of MIECF´s role as a green platform has been outstanding and the event has been listed as an “UFI Approved Event” since 2011. Green Showcase and Green Expo are the two major events under MIECF. At the Green Forum last year, the Organiser invited Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, Former Chief Economist of the World Bank, Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences of the University of Macau, and Professor at the University of Columbia (USA), and Mr James Jao, Senior Expert on Planning, State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of the People´s Republic of China and Steering Member of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) as keynote speakers. A total of nine forums were held, including seven sessions and two seminars, having congregated 58 experts and scholars from 12 countries and regions, to express their insights on environmental issues. In-depth discussions on environmental topics were held and the content was more internationally oriented, to enhance the standard and quality of the event. Approximately 3,000 people attended last year´s forum held under the MIECF. Furthermore, last year, the Organiser held for the first time two sessions under the Green Forum, in co-operation with the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People´s Republic of China and the Pacific-Asia Travel Association (PATA), to explore two hot environmental topics, namely, the relationship between ecological civilization and the development of low-carbon, and sustainable development of corporate social responsibility and tourism economy, taking into account the challenges and opportunities that Macao is currently facing in the course of its development process. Last year, the Green Showcase venue covered an area of more than 16,000 square metres, covering six major areas, namely, energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, green transportation, waste and water management solutions, and environmental services. The exhibition venue was divided into several zones, to allow for better concentration of products sorted by types, in order to achieve better practical benefits. Furthermore, the Organiser will continue to provide the ““Convention and Exhibition Through Train” ” service, by co-operating with the relevant business associations in the Guangdong province to organize delegations of professionals in the environmental industry in the Pearl River Delta region to participate in the event and conduct business discussions in Macao. The service has received positive responses. At the same time, the Organiser actively promoted the environmental aspects of the “Green Showcase”. In this regard, apart from using recycled materials in the design and set up of the venue and abstaining from using carpets last year, , 3,000 potted plants were used for decorating the venue for the first time, and these plants were distributed to the public at the Green Public Day, which took place on the last day of the event. Besides, spray paintings totaling 2,500 square metres were donated to social enterprises, for the production of environmentally friendly shopping bags. MIECF had thus demonstrated the full implementation of the policy of the Macao SAR Government, by “Reducing Waste at Source and Recycling Resources”, aiming to further reduce the amount of wastes generated by the event. As one of the main activities to promote co-operation, Green Matching contributes every year for the implementation of numerous forms of co-operation. During the 3-day event last year, around 800 on-site business matching sessions were arranged (not including those exchanges that were freely arranged inside the venue by the participants themselves), including business matching for the hotel industry and government agencies. Participants in the Green Matching came from Mainland China, South Korea, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Projects discussed involved environmentally friendly hotel supplies, co-operation in solid waste recycling, indoor air purification, LED energy-saving lamps, technical cooperation, technical co-operation in sewage treatment, vertical planting technology, green building materials and solutions for waste recycling and wastewater management, etc. Networking sessions for the environmental industry were held during the event. Last year, during the 3-day event, 26 agreements related to co-operation projects were signed. The signatories were from Mainland China (including Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Shenzhen municipalities in Guangdong Province, Italy Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and involved the following industries: environmental protection, construction, information exchange, education, technical co-operation and product agent, covering co-operation in the areas of environmental technology and information exchange, co-operation in the setting-up of an international-level base for the quality control of Traditional Chinese Medicine and trade platform for the healthcare industry, kitchenware and waste recovery and recycling, environmental co-operation, energy engineering, sale agent for environmental products and environmental education, etc. Since its inception, MIECF has contributed to the signing of over 180 projects, and a large part of these projects were already implemented. This amply demonstrates that MIECF is widely recognized and supported by the environmental industry, and has already become an important platform for the environmental industry in the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region and the international market. In the course of last year´s Green Public Day, a series of environment-themed activities were arranged for public participation, to disseminate environmental information, and attracted the participation of approximately 3,000 people. Furthermore, guided visits were also organized for 600 students from several local schools. The theme for last year´s Green Public Day was “Reduce the Use of Plastic Bags to Make Our City Greener”, including “environment workshop” that required people to use their imagination to turn waste into treasure, as well as themed games to enable parents and their children to share the fun of environmental protection. Aiming to further promote environmental awareness and understanding of environmental protection and MIECF´s philosophy, the Environmental Protection Bureau has organised guided towers for 600 students from 12 schools to visit the venue, to introduce Green Public Day and information about MIECF´s related activities, in a bid to turn MIECF into a mobile teaching tool for environmental protection. 2015MIECF, held under the theme of Green Economy – Solution for Clean Air, will invite professionals and academics to share their insights in air pollution control technology and experience. It covers several areas, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, green transportation, waste and water management solutions, environmental services, air quality and other environmental products and services. Through a series of activities, including Green Showcase, Green Forum, Green Matching and Green Public Day, this annual event dedicated to the environmental community aims to promote the exchange of advanced environmental products and services, drive the development and co-operation of the international environmental industry, create business opportunities for the environmental sector, and disseminate the environmental philosophy. Interested parties in the environmental industry are invited to actively participate in the relevant activities.
