The Government held a meeting with the Zhuhai Municipal Government to discuss matters relating to a scheme for eligible Macao-registered vehicles to enter Hengqin Island in Zhuhai Prefecture. The scheme is due to start on 20 December.

Detailed arrangements discussed during the meeting included: eligibility criteria for vehicles entering the island; a management plan for the scheme; and other arrangements regarding the implementation of the measure.

The Secretary for Security, Mr Wong Sio Chak, represented the Government to discuss with member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee, Mr Zhang Qiang, at the meeting held in Macao on Wednesday (30 November).

The authorities in Macao and Zhuhai will work closely to ensure successful implementation of the measure and will announce – in a timely manner – the application procedures and issues relating to insurance. The scheme – enabling eligible Macao-registered vehicles to enter Hengqin Island, next door to Macao – is supported by the Central Government.

With the help of the Central Government and that of the Guangdong Provincial Government, Macao and Zhuhai have been able to complete a large number of initiatives. The channel for such efforts has been the existing Guangdong-Macao and Zhuhai-Macao cooperation mechanisms respectively. The places aim to continue such cooperation.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, is paying great attention to the implementation of the vehicle scheme. In particular, he is aware that the final stage of preparation for such a measure heralds new benefits and improved convenience of travel for Macao people.

Government officials attending the meeting included security authorities and Adviser of the Chief Executive’s Office, Mr Kou Chin Hung, together with officials from Gongbei Customs District, Zhuhai Port Bureau, Zhuhai Public Security Bureau and other related departments.
