Demographic statistics for the 2nd quarter of 2017


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 648,400 as at end-June 2017, a slight increase of 100 quarter-to-quarter; female population (342,500) accounted for 52.8% of the total.

There were 1,596 live births delivered in the second quarter of 2017, up by 36 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 829 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 108.1, corresponding to 108.1 male babies per 100 female babies. In the first half of 2017, a total of 3,156 live births were recorded, down by 147 year-on-year.

Meanwhile, mortality totalled 513, an increase of 7 quarter-to-quarter; the top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (189), Diseases of the Circulatory System (127) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (93). In the first half of 2017, mortality dropped by 205 year-on-year to 1,019.

In the second quarter of 2017, Chinese immigrants (776) and individuals granted right of abode (382) dropped by 435 and 29 respectively quarter-to-quarter. Non-resident workers totalled 178,694 at the end of the second quarter, a decrease of 1,185 over the previous quarter.

A total of 933 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the second quarter, down by 161 quarter-to-quarter. In the first half of 2017, there were 2,027 cases of marriage registration, up by 44 year-on-year.
