Nurturing World Champion Martial Arts Athletes MPI’s Bachelor of Physical Education Successfully Accredited by HEEACT

MPI’s Physical Education programme nurtures many world champion martial arts athletes

The Bachelor of Physical Education of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has successfully passed a programme validation exercise by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), being the first bachelor degree programme in Macao to undergo an academic review for such sports professionals. HEEACT, a renowned academic accreditation institution in Asia, is a member of the Asia Pacific Quality Network and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education. Announcing the review report on its website, HEEACT provides very positive comments on the programme and acknowledges the programme content, teaching quality, learning environment for students and the support mechanisms of teaching and learning at MPI.

To be in line with the policy objectives in the area of education of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao S.A.R. Government, MPI actively promotes programme review/accreditation to enhance the quality of teaching and learning of its degree programmes. Last November, MPI invited HEEACT to conduct a programme validation exercise for its Bachelor of Physical Education programme. HEEACT sent a review panel of seven experts to conduct a comprehensive validation exercise of the physical education programme. The scope of the validation exercise at MPI included teaching objectives, programme design, faculty quality, learning resources, student support, research, professional services, performance of graduates and continuous improvement mechanisms. Besides examining the self-evaluation report and more than 100 other relevant documents, the validation panel conducted a site visit to evaluate different teaching and learning facilities of the programme, and to meet with management, teaching staff, students and alumni of the programme. The validation panel acknowledged the overall teaching quality of the programme and appreciated the programme as having a long-term development strategic plan and a continuous improvement mechanism. In addition, the panel also reported significant recognition in areas such as students’ assessments, programme content, graduates' performance, comprehensive teaching and learning mechanisms and the continuous enhancement of its teaching quality.

The school of Physical Education and Sports, founded in 1993, has over 20 years of experience. The school, which has been providing sports professionals to Macao, is also known as the cradle of nurturing world champion sports athletes. Many students have won the world championship in international martial arts competitions, and also won gold medals in the Asian Games, East Asian Games and other international competitions, which gives glory to Macao SAR and MPI. The academic programme and graduates’ standards of the School received positive comments, with graduates of the Physical Education programme bringing their skills and talents into full play in different areas of the society. As the only higher education institution in Macao offering a bachelor of physical education programme, MPI has successfully passed the programme validation by a renowned academic accreditation institution in Asia. The continuous enhancement of the quality of its teaching depends very much on the great support of the society. MPI will further enhance the quality of its programme content and contribute to the development of higher education and cultivation of sports talents in Macao.
