UM professor Mak Pui-In selected as IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer

UM professor Mak Pui-In has been selected as IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer

Mak Pui-In, associate director (research) of the State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI and associate professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), has been selected as the Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS). The nominee must be a well-known member in the SSCS community, which is judged by the quantity and quality of his or her SSCS publications.

Prof Mak will serve as the IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer for a two-year term, from 2017 to 2018. Previously, he was selected as the Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for the 2014-2015 period. Prof Mak is one of the few people whose research work is recognised by two IEEE societies. He was born and educated in Macao, and received his bachelor’s and PhD degrees from UM. Prof Mak’s distinguished lectures are focused on ultra-low-power radios for the Internet of Things, software-defined radios for 2G/3G/4G cellular phones, and handheld microsystems for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and genotyping.

The selection of the Distinguished Lecturer undergoes a rigorous process. According to the IEEE SSCS, the nominee not only must be a well-known member in the SSCS community, which is judged by the quantity and quality of his or her SSCS publications over the past five years, but must also has served in the past ten years as a member of the Technical Programme Committee for one or more of the SSCS-sponsored conferences or as an associate editor of the Journal of Solid-State Circuits(JSSC).

Prof Mak’s research interests include analog and RF circuits and systems for wireless and multidisciplinary applications. Since 2011, his team has presented 12 chips at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), and has received the ISSCC Silkroad Award. So far his team has received the SSCS Predoctoral Achievement Award three times. He is currently a member of the Technical Programme Committee of ISSCC, European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC), and Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC), as well as a guest editor of the JSSC.
