In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Macao International Music Festival, distinguished local playwright Lawrence Lei, composer Liu Chenchen and poet Un Sio San joined hands to create the first local chamber opera. Widely-praised for its lyrical melodies and charming local flavours, the opera returns to stage with a polished script, a refined libretto, a magnificent cast and a larger orchestra.

Famous playwright Tang Xianzu stops by Macao on his way to southern China. Here he meets Maria, a charismatic Portuguese lady, and they quickly form a heart-warming relationship. Shuffling between facts and fiction, A Fragrant Dream tells the life-changing encounter that inspired Tang’s masterpiece The Peony Pavilion.
