Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that Value of Construction Work Done by the Construction Sector decreased by 13.9% year-on-year to MOP79.38 billion in 2016, due to the successive completion of large-scale hotels and entertainment facilities as well as a decrease in private residential projects. Total Receipts (comprising Value of Construction Work Done and Other Receipts) of the sector amounted to MOP81.15 billion, down by 13.1%. Intermediate Consumption (MOP61.66 billion) and Labour Cost (MOP12.05 billion) went down by 11.7% and 17.0% respectively. Gross Surplus, which equals Total Receipts less Intermediate Consumption and Labour Cost, dropped by 17.4% to MOP7.43 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled MOP19.48 billion, down by 17.2%.
A total of 2,920 establishments were operating in the Construction Sector in 2016, an increase of 170 year-on-year, consisting of 1,272 establishments engaging in construction projects with permits and 1,648 undertaking simple renovation projects. Total number of persons engaged went down by 5,645 to 45,316.
For the establishments engaging in construction projects with permits, Value of Construction Work Done (MOP76.41 billion), Total Receipts (MOP78.16 billion) and Intermediate Consumption (MOP59.79 billion) decreased by 14.5%, 13.6% and 12.1% respectively year-on-year, owing to the reduction in private construction projects. Gross Surplus (MOP7.06 billion), Gross Value Added (MOP18.37 billion) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (MOP193 million) of these establishments registered decreases of 18.8%, 18.2% and 42.4% respectively year-on-year.
A total of 1,432 construction projects with permits were carried out in 2016, up by 55 year-on-year; number of public works (542) rose by 71 while that of private construction projects (890) dropped by 16. Value of Construction Work Done by the private sector went down by 18.7% year-on-year to MOP64.38 billion, of which value of construction of hotels and entertainment facilities (MOP47.93 billion) and private residential buildings (MOP11.15 billion) decreased by 21.0% and 29.1% respectively. On the other hand, Value of Construction Work Done by the public sector grew by 18.2% year-on-year to MOP12.03 billion, of which value of construction of public housing (MOP2.26 billion) rose by 3.9%, and that of medical and health projects (MOP2.17 billion) surged by 78.3% driven by the foundation works of the island hospital.
Analysed by location, a total of 1,091 construction projects were carried out in the Macao Peninsula, and Value of Construction Work Done increased by 40.1% year-on-year to MOP20.03 billion. The growth was spurred by the private residential housing and hotel projects in Zona de Aterros do Porto Exterior, as well as the construction of the Public Transport Interchange at Barra. Meanwhile, 63 projects were carried out in Cotai, with Value of Construction Work Done falling by 24.6% year-on-year to MOP41.50 billion; 98 projects were in Coloane, and Value of Construction Work Done decreased by 38.0% year-on-year to MOP7.55 billion.
As regards the establishments undertaking simple renovation projects, Total Receipts (MOP2.98 billon), Value of Construction Work Done (MOP2.96 billion), Intermediate Consumption (MOP1.88 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP1.11 billion) increased by 4.5%, 4.4%, 4.7% and 4.2% respectively year-on-year in 2016; Gross Surplus totalled MOP367 million, up by 24.8%.
