Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 3,040 establishments were operating in the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector in 2016, an increase of 251 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 4.6% to 20,244, with employees accounting for 80.2%. Receipts and expenditure of the sector amounted to MOP 27.83 billion and MOP 22.01 billion respectively, down by 3.0% and 4.9% year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy grew by 4.3% to MOP 10.22 billion, while Gross Surplus dropped slightly by 0.5% to MOP 5.63 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation totalled MOP 1.62 billion, down by 43.3% year-on-year.
Number of establishments operating in the Transport & Storage Sector rose by 242 year-on-year to 3,000, owing to an increased number of taxis in Land Transport. Number of persons engaged went up by 5.3% to 17,750. Driven by the growth in receipts from Passenger Transport (MOP 8.90 billion, +9.9%) and Rent of Vehicles (MOP 1.26 billion, +16.9%), receipts of the sector grew by 5.1% year-on-year to MOP 19.90 billion. Analysed by industry, receipts of Supporting & Auxiliary Transport Activities (MOP 10.08 billion) rose by 2.2% year-on-year, and those of Air Transport (MOP 4.10 billion), Land Transport (MOP 3.17 billion) and Sea Transport (MOP 2.56 billion) increased by 1.9%, 25.5% and 1.5% respectively.
Expenditure of the Transport & Storage Sector amounted to MOP 16.62 billion, up by 3.3% year-on-year. Operating Expenses grew by 2.2% to MOP 7.99 billion, of which expenditure on rent of machinery & equipment (MOP 1.37 billion) and contractual services (MOP 1.14 billion) rose by 13.7% and 12.0% respectively while fuel expenses (MOP 1.73 billion) dropped by 7.5%. Moreover, Compensation of Employees (MOP 3.69 billion) increased by 12.6% whereas Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission Paid (MOP 4.94 billion) decreased by 1.2%.
Gross Value Added of the Transport & Storage Sector grew by 13.9% year-on-year to MOP 6.97 billion. As the growth in receipts outpaced that in expenditure, Gross Surplus (MOP 3.28 billion) registered an increase of 15.4%. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector declined by 42.4% year-on-year to MOP 883 million as no additional aircrafts were acquired by the Air Transport establishments.
There were 40 establishments operating in the Communications Sector, up by 9 year-on-year; number of persons engaged rose slightly by 0.2% to 2,494. Receipts of the sector decreased by 18.7% year-on-year to MOP 7.93 billion, dragged by a 34.3% drop in receipts from sales of goods (MOP 3.40 billion); besides, receipts from postal & telecommunications services (MOP 3.76 billion) dropped marginally by 0.6%. Establishments operating in Telecommunications Services contributed 93.2% (MOP 7.39 billion) to the receipts of the Communications Sector. Expenditure of the sector went down by 23.5% year-on-year to MOP 5.39 billion, mainly incurred on Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission Paid (MOP 3.57 billion), down by 33.7%; meanwhile, Operating Expenses (MOP 925 million) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 903 million) increased 14.4% and 4.7% respectively.
Gross Value Added of the Communications Sector amounted to MOP 3.25 billion, down by 11.7% year-on-year. Gross Surplus declined by 16.7% to MOP 2.34 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector dropped by 44.2% year-on-year to MOP 736 million, owing to a decrease in acquisition of fixed assets such as telecommunications equipment and shops.
