UM ranked among the top globally in TCM and natural medicine research

UM is ranked among the top globally in traditional Chinese medicine and natural medicine

The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) and State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at the University of Macau (UM) have once again been recognised by international authoritative institutes. Dr Xiao Jianbo, an assistant professor from the ICMS, has made the list of Highly Cited Researchers (HCRs) published by Clarivate Analytics for two consecutive years. Dr Xiao is the only scholar from Macao in the field of biomedical sciences to have been included on the list of 2016 and 2017 Clarivate Analytics HCRs. In addition, UM has been included in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database for ranking among the top 1 per cent in terms of the citation frequency of published papers in the field of pharmacology and toxicology, which shows international recognition of UM’s research capacity in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and natural medicine.

According to Clarivate Analytics, 230 scholars from 18 disciplines affiliated with universities in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao have entered the list of HCRs 2017. Dr Xiao’s inclusion on the list for two consecutive years shows international recognition of his significant and continuous contributions to the field. Only highly cited papers published in science and social sciences journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (Essential Science Indicators, also known as ESI) between 2005 and 2015 were surveyed for the 2017 list. A total of 134,832 papers have been defined as ‘Highly Cited Papers’ as they rank among the top 1 per cent by citations in their fields and year of publication in the Web of Science. 3,542 inclusions were made on the 2017 list. 282 of them are scholars with Chinese institutions as their primary affiliation (32 from Hong Kong, 18 from Taiwan, and 3 from Macao). The number of HCRs is an important factor that can influence a university’s international rankings.

In addition, UM has been included in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database for ranking among the top 1 per cent in terms of the citation frequency of published papers in the field of pharmacology and toxicology, which shows international recognition of UM’s research capacity in the fields of Chinese medicine and natural medicine. The ESI Highly Cited Papers list currently contains 24 papers published by researchers from UM’s ICMS. Dr Xiao has published nearly 80 research papers in SCI-indexed journals as the first author or corresponding author. Among these research papers, more than 20 in the fields of nutritional science and Chinese medical sciences have been listed as ESI Highly Cited Papers.
