In order to respond proactively to public views and to facilitate the circulation of currency coins, the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) has determined to continue and to enhance the free coin exchange service (including the exchange of coins for banknotes and vice versa), after the conduct of a review of the opinions collected regarding the service.
The free coin exchange service commenced on 25th September of last year. After a trial period of 6 months and under continuous monitoring, it is noted that a certain level of demand for circulation coins exists in the market, and currently market supply is relatively sufficient. In order to have more efficient management of the circulation of coins, AMCM has requested the two Note-Issuing Banks to adjust the quantity of coins that can be exchanged per transaction for free by the public, which includes: one pack of MOP0.10 coins, two packs of MOP0.50 coins, one pack of MOP1.00 coins and one pack of MOP5.00 coins. The public should adhere to Banks’ current by-appointment mode of arrangement for the exchange of coins and contact in advance the respective branch of the two Note-Issuing Banks to inquire about supply of coins for more details.
In the meantime, the free service of exchanging coins into banknotes by the two Note-Issuing Banks will continue to be provided to the public and is not subject to any exchange limits. To receive the service, the public should use the current cash service offered at the two Banks. The coins to be exchanged should be classified by denomination beforehand, and upon confirmation of the counted amount of coins, service users can opt to receive the counted sum in cash or have the sum deposited in their account at the Bank.
