“Conference Ambassadors” Develop their Charisma Guiding the development of Macao´s Convention and Exhibition Industry


Mr. Liu Chung Laung, a member of the Advisory Council of the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund, Mr. He Jintang, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Mr. Li Ning, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Li Ning Company Limited recently received their certificates of appointment from Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac, to become Macao´s “Conference Ambassadors”. The said Ambassadors stated that, with the support from central government and the national strategy, together with Macao’s Mice’s software and hardware, they believe that it is possible to attract a larger number of international conferences to Macao, and that they will contribute the development of Macao’s convention and exhibitions industry, as well as the growth of various business sectors of Macao, so as to raise the “soft power” of Macao’s MICE Industry.

Aiming to attract more international conventions to Macao, promote exchanges between Macao and the international community and drive the growth and development of all sectors of the local economy, the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) launched the “Conference Ambassadors” programme and succeeded in having six prestigious personalities from the fields of medicine, civil construction, sports, information technology and chemistry, to be “Conference Ambassadors”.

Secretary Leong Vai Tac thanked the “Conference Ambassadors” for having accepted the appointment, and pointed out that the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region is committed to develop Macao’s moderate economic diversification, and will intensify the efforts to cultivate the MICE industry. He hopes that the “Conference Ambassadors” will help to promote Macao as the MICE destination through their prestige and network, so as to attract a larger number of international conferences to the city.

Mr. Liu Chung Laung said that he will follow Macao’s economic diversification strategy and use his contacts and influence in the professional field to recommend a greater number of science and technology-related conventions to Macao. Mr. Liu pointed out that intelligent meeting are becoming a popular trend and that, if used properly, they could help to improve the “gold content” of the business cards of Macao’s MICE industry. He noted that thanks to the government’s supporting policies, together with the city´s rich cultural heritage, coupled with the world class hardware and software meeting facilities, the “Conference Ambassadors” programme will assist to prove that Macao´s MICE advantage and capability in hosting international conventions.

Mr. He Jintang said that he was honoured to be the “Conference Ambassador” for Macao, hoping to be able to use his prestige in the construction sector to invite more organizations and talented people in his field to organize events and participate in conventions held in Macao. He emphasized that guided by the “Belt and Road Initiative”, the Portuguese-speaking Countries have become a new path crossing the European, African and Asian continents, Macao can develop its strengths as a Sino-Lusophone platform and expand the trading relationship between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries through the hosting of conventions and exhibitions. He also noted that the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will benefit the promotion of economic diversification and create conditions for the sharing of resources and the establishment of a mutually beneficial trade environment. Such factors represent exactly the new opportunities arisen from the development policy of “Priority to Convention”, he said.

“Conference Ambassador” Li Ning said that he will actively go along with the “Conference Ambassadors” programme of the Macao SAR government, and will use his influence in the sports to assist Macao in attracting more sports-related events to the city. Mr. Li said that Macao is a very dynamic city and the SAR Government has upgraded Macao’s competitiveness, economic dynamism and the quality of life of its citizens through different channels, He believes that the “Conference Ambassadors” programme will be better coordinated and promote the growth and development of several other business sectors.

Three other “Convention Ambassadors”, namely, Ms. Zhu Lilan, former Minister of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Orlando Monteiro da Silva, former President of the FDI Dental Federation and Professor Tsui Lap-chee, a prestigious specialist in molecular genetics, will be coming to Macao soon to receive their appointment certificates.
