Survey on manpower needs and wages for the 1st quarter of 2018 – Banking sector


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 27 banks in Macao; number of full-time employees increased by 186 year-on-year to 6,239 at the end of the first quarter of 2018. Analysed by occupation, there were 1,689 directors and managers, and 2,057 clerks (including 736 bank tellers).

In March 2018, average earnings (excluding bonuses) of full-time employees amounted to MOP26,630, up by 2.3% year-on-year. Average earnings of bank tellers increased by 7.3% to MOP16,500.

At the end of the first quarter of 2018, job vacancies stood at 414, an increase of 169 from a year earlier; vacancies for clerks totalled 245, including 115 for bank tellers.

In terms of recruitment prerequisites, 58.9% of the vacancies required work experience, 97.8% required tertiary education, and requirement for knowledge of Mandarin and English accounted for 97.6% and 98.3% respectively.

In the first quarter of 2018, the Banking Sector hired 239 new employees; the job vacancy rate (6.2%) and the employee recruitment rate (3.8%) rose by 2.3 and 0.9 percentage points respectively year-on-year, indicating that there were still many vacant posts to be filled in the Banking Sector in the quarter.

As regards vocational training, the Banking Sector had 8,206 employee participants attending training courses provided by the employer (including courses organised by the banks or in conjunction with other institutions, and those sponsored by the banks). The majority of the participants (87.2%) attended courses organised by the banks. Most of the participants (62.0%) attended Business & Administration courses, followed by Law courses (29.7%).
