Transforming a classic, absurdist play into Kunqu opera brings along inevitable clashes, both culturally and aesthetically, although it certainly charts new horizons for the Xiqu repertoire. A case in point is the adaptation of the Romanian-French playwright Eugène Ionesco's play The Chairs. This talk will discuss the strategies used in staging this experimental production, reflecting on the exploration of contemporary Xiqu.

Speaker: Lum Man Yee
Lum is a Hong Kong-based Chinese opera scholar, educator, critic, and editor-in-chief of the arts and humanities platform ‘Artistic Moments’. She has worked as a research associate of the Kwan Fong Cultural Research & Development Programme, having collaborated as a part-time lecturer with the Department of Cultural Studies at Hong Kong’s Lingnan University, at the School of Chinese Opera and the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

The deadline for registration is 20 May. In case of oversubscription, selection will be made by drawing lots.
