Who could ever forget Ang Lee’s love-tragedy Brokeback Mountain? Released in 2005, the groundbreaking Oscar-winning film was an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Proulx’s short story. After being turned into this modern opera by American composer Charles Wuorinen, the romantic tale brings back to life the harshly imposing Wyoming landscape, where the story is set.

Considered a landmark on the adaptation of love stories for mainstream cinema, its provocative return is equally ambitious. This operatic version is superbly staged by Ivo van Hove, revered Belgian director known for his avant-garde theatre masterpieces.

Brought by Madrid’s Teatro Real in all its beauty and momentous tragedy, Brokeback Mountain tells the story of ranch hand Ennis del Mar and rodeo cowboy Jack Twist, two young men who meet and fall in love on a fictional US Western mountain, in 1963. A majestic depiction of a complex relationship, taking place in a very conservative society.
