Inspired by the millennial Japanese tale Princess Kaguya, the innovative choreographer Jo Kanamori created The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a captivating, glowing world of celestial magic materialised on stage by The Tokyo Ballet. Set to the romantic melodies of Debussy, including his beautiful moonlight suite, Clair de Lune, this bewitching piece brilliantly merges ancient literature and classic storytelling.
The ballet follows the story of a lunar baby princess who is discovered by an old bamboo cutter. Raised as his own daughter, the little girl grows into a great beauty, attracting the attention of powerful suitors whom she sets with impossible tasks to win her heart, ultimately revealing her celestial origins.
Having celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024, The Tokyo Ballet is known for staging masterpieces by iconic creators, from the ingenious John Neumeier to the irreverent Mats Ek or the groundbreaking William Forsythe. Propelled by the same creative verve, Kanamori has been working with prominent international companies, namely the Nederlands Dans Theater where he had his debut at a young age. Now his twinkling, amusing choreography is captured on a specially shot film, to the thrill of balletomanes.
