Proposed facilities for hazardous materials to undergo environmental impact assessment

The Government has decided to conduct an environmental impact assessment on two sites in Coloane proposed for creation of storage facilities for hazardous materials.

The decision to have the assessment was made after taking into account opinions expressed by members of the public and suggestions from the Secretary for Security.

Having an environmental impact assessment would address the issue of the security of any such facilities and ensure maximal safety for the public and for their property.

The two proposed sites, located respectively at Estrada do Dique Oeste and Avenida Marginal Flor de Lotus are to be examined by local public works departments regarding the potential environmental impact to the surroundings, should they be used for structures storing hazardous materials.

The Government pays great attention to the opinions of members of the public and understands their concern, and their perception there might somehow be a threat to the community regarding the proposed storage facilities.

The Government is stepping up efforts to provide the public with further details regarding the criteria applied in selecting the proposed locations, and the safety management measures that would be applied to them in the event of such use. Such effort by the Government would enhance transparency regarding the management of hazardous materials.

The Government will continue paying close attention to opinions from the public, in order to press ahead with the overall management on hazardous materials.
