UM professor appointed to overseas expert panel of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Prof Mak has been appointed a member of the overseas expert panel of the CAS

Mak Pui In, Associate Director (research) of the University of Macau (UM) State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, who is also a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, recently attended an event for participants in the 100 Experts Programme and the 1,000 Experts Programme held in Beijing. During the event, he was appointed a member of the overseas expert panel of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

This year, ten outstanding scholars from outside mainland China have been appointed by the CAS to its overseas expert panel. Seven of them come from universities in the United States, including the California Institute of Technology, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of Washington. One of them comes from Canada and another member comes from Japan.

The CAS’s overseas expert panel aims to encourage outstanding Chinese citizens who received education overseas to return to China to serve their motherland, so that new programmes in mainland China, including talent programmes and award programmes, can be evaluated in a more scientific and standardised manner. Candidates for the overseas expert panel are recommended by research institutes under the CAS, Chinese embassies or consulates in foreign countries, or those who are currently on the expert panel.

A native of Macao, Prof Mak is recognised internationally as a leading scholar in the field of solid-state circuits, with 17 papers on chips presented at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) from 2011 to 2018. This is more than the total number of papers presented by mainland universities at the conference during the same period, which is 16. Prof Mak is currently the associate editor of theIEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, a member of the Technical Programme Committee of the ISSCC, and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.
