MAM calls for submissions of proposals for the “Macao-China Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition”

The “58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition” will be held in May 2019 in Venice, Italy. The Macao Art Museum (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), is calling for submission of proposals for the Macao-China Pavilion at the Biennale from today until 5 October. All interested teams are welcome to submit their proposals.

The“58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition” is themed “May You Live in Interesting Times”, which implies the present era of uneasiness and chaos, counting on Ralph Rugoff as chief curator. This call for submissions of proposals for the Macao-China Pavilion is open to teams only; teams must be comprised of a minimum of two persons, one of which must be the curator and the other the exhibitor. All members must hold a valid Macao S.A.R. Resident Identity Card and have participated in contemporary art exhibitions. The jury will be comprised of local or overseas art experts as well as representatives from IC; the final selection will be announced in November this year.

Established in 1895, the “Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition” is the oldest biennale and one of the three major art exhibitions in the world; it is also the largest international contemporary art exchange platform. In 2017, the Biennale drew in over 615,000 visitors and art lovers from all over the world and was covered by around five thousand reporters from media outlets.

It has been the sixth time that MAM has participated in the Biennale under the name of “Macao-China” since 2007, thereby promoting Macao’s contemporary art on the international stage and allowing audiences from around the world to understand the current status of art in Macao. The call for submission of proposals aims to select local talented artists and outstanding works for participating in the Biennale, to ensure the level of participation, to ensure fairness and openness of the event and to encourage local curators and artists to participate. The regulations and application forms for the call for submission of proposals can be browsed or downloaded at the website of MAM (www.MAM.gov.mo).
