The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents Noetic by the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company, one of Europe’s the edgiest contemporary dance groups in Scandinavia, to be staged on 18 November at the Grand Auditorium.
Conceived by topical choreographer Siki Larbi Cherkaoui, Noetic merges fashion, design and contemporary moves, framed by an eclectic cultural and sonic background. Immersing the audience into humanity’s urges to both control and escape its own rules, the play piece explores mind, body and space, in a display of elegance and sharpness. Smartly dressed in black and white by Belgian fashion label Les Hommes, two dozen dancers step on the sleek stage, drawing gestures sometimes fluid, sometimes mechanical conveying to build, alter and demolish reality. The cast expresses a whirlpool of emotions, manipulating carbon fibre shapes imagined by renowned British sculptor and set designer Antony Gormley. Meanwhile, the music specially composed for the Swedish company by Szymon Brzóska, gradually develops into a blend of orchestral passages, percussion and vocal solos interpreted by Swedish singer Miriam Andersén.
Since its world premiere in 2014, Noetic has been thrilling audiences all over Europe. The piece is one of many creations the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company has been producing in collaboration with internationally renowned choreographers, emerging artists and composers, enriching its extended history of avant-garde works.
