The Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre and the Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies, which are under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), University of Macau (UM), jointly held a seminar titled ‘Methods of Language Documentation’. During the seminar, Prof Hugo Cardoso from the University of Lisbon explained the basic theory and practices of language documentation.
The event attracted 45 participants in different fields, including 39 postgraduate students and six scholars from UM’s FAH, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Education, as well as Macao Polytechnic Institute, the University of Saint Joseph, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Shanghai Normal University.
The seminar proved useful for students whose work involves documenting endangered and lesser-known languages, as well as those doing research on second language acquisition, anthropology, and education, as it equipped them with the theories and methods necessary for archiving audios, videos, and language data. Many participants hope to attend similar seminars in the future to exchange ideas with other participants and enhance their knowledge and skills in the field.
