CE urges restoration of power supply as soon as possible

The Chief Executive asked the power utility company this evening to restore as soon as possible power supply to circa 20,000 households affected by a blackout caused by Typhoon Mangkhut, once conditions are safe for emergency repairs.

Mr Chui Sai On issued the directive during a third interdepartmental meeting of the day, convened by the Civil Protection Operations Centre at 5pm. He said he was very concerned to hear about the households being affected by the blackout.

During the 5pm meeting, the Chief Executive was briefed on the measures taken in response toTyphoon Mangkhut, and the plans for returning community life to normal when the existing typhoon signal was either lowered or cancelled.

The Secretary for Security, Mr Wong Sio Chak; the Commissioner-General of the Unitary Police Service, Mr Ma Io Kun; the Director-General of the Macao Customs, Mr Vong Iao Lek; and the Chief-of-Office of the Office of the Chief Executive, Ms O Lam were among those present at the meeting.

The Chief Executive expressed his gratitude to all those participating in the civil protection efforts.

At present, the blackout caused by flooding in low-lying areas and the resulting disruption in telecommunications services is the biggest concern of the Government, said the Chief Executive.

As flooded power transformer stations in low-lying areas were the cause of the blackout, emergency repairs can only be done when the water recedes.

Mr Wong Sio Chak noted that the police would reinforce patrolling of the areas affected by the blackout to ensure the community's safety until power supply was restored.

Meanwhile all departments are assessing the post-typhoon clean-up work in a bid to get the community back to normal as soon as possible.

The Chief Executive has presided over five interdepartmental meetings at the Civil Protection Operations Centre in the past two days.

In concluding this evening's meeting, he once again thanked all the public agencies taking part in the civil protection efforts.
