CE: Post-typhoon recovery efforts in full swing

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, said today that recovery efforts, after Typhoon Mangkhut struck Macao over the weekend, were well underway, and work was progressing at a fast pace.

In particular, the civil protection management team should step up efforts to remove from the streets all typhoon-related debris and any waste brought about by floodwater, in order to bring community life back to normal as soon as possible.

Mr Chui reiterated his directives to the civil protection management team during a visit this morning to several of the city’s neighbourhoods, aimed at gaining a better understanding on the progress of post-typhoon recovery work.

Following the lowering of Typhoon Signal No.8, Mr Chui paid a visit to several districts that were affected by severe flooding during the powerful storm, including Fai Chi Kei and areas near the S. Lourenço Municipal Market, the Hong Kung Temple in Rua Cinco de Outubro, and the Red Market.

After listening to briefings on the respective recovery progress in some of the city’s districts, Mr Chui said he was pleased to learn that people in some of the areas most affected by Typhoon Mangkhut were able to resume their everyday lives quickly.

During the visit, the Chief Executive also engaged in conversations with members of the public to learn more about the challenges these people had faced during the typhoon. Mr Chui additionally talked to a number of shopkeepers in order to gain an understanding of the impact of the storm in their respective businesses.

Some shopkeepers told Mr Chui that they were well prepared to deal with unforeseen situations that could arise from a powerful storm; thus their businesses were able to resume operations today after a clean-up of the premises from any typhoon-related waste.

Mr Chui said he was very satisfied to hear that the business owners that he talked to – during his visit to some of the areas of the city most affected by Typhoon Mangkhut – had not suffered significant economic losses due to the severe storm.

Officials accompanying Mr Chui during today’s visit were: the Secretary for Security, Mr Wong Sio Chak; the Commissioner-General of the Unitary Police Service and commander of the joint civil protection operations, Mr Ma Io Kun; the Director-General of the Macao Customs, Mr Vong Iao Lek; and the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms O Lam.
