Results of industrial survey 2017


The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released the results of Industrial Survey for 2017. Total Receipts of the industrial establishments in Macao amounted to MOP11.54 billion in 2017, up by 12.1% year-on-year. Intermediate Consumption and Compensation of Employees totalled MOP6.10 billion and MOP2.20 billion respectively, up by 12.3% and 6.7% year-on-year. Gross Surplus, which equals Total Receipts less Total Expenditure (Intermediate Consumption and Compensation of Employees), of the industrial sector grew by 15.6% year-on-year to MOP3.25 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled MOP5.45 billion, up by 11.9% year-on-year. A total of 932 establishments were operating in industrial production, an increase of 50 as compared to 2016, with 37 establishments engaging in Manufacture of Food Products & Beverages. Total number of persons engaged in the industrial sector went up by 451 to 12,498.

Total Receipts of the Manufacturing sector rose by 4.2% year-on-year to MOP7.05 billion, mainly due to a nearly 30% growth in receipts from Manufacture of Food Products & Beverages, which accounted for the largest share (34.7%) in Total Receipts of the sector. Intermediate Consumption (MOP4.61 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP1.58 billion) of the Manufacturing sector grew by 3.1% and 11.6% respectively. As the increase in Total Expenditures outpaced that in Total Receipts, Gross Surplus declined by 2.1% year-on-year to MOP862 million. Meanwhile, Gross Value Added rose by 6.4% to MOP2.44 billion. Number of manufacturing establishments totalled 926, up by 50 year-on-year, with number of persons engaged rising by 4.1% to 11,370.

Analysed by industry of the Manufacturing sector, Total Receipts of Manufacture of Food Products & Beverages grew by 29.7% year-on-year to MOP2.45 billion on account of an increase in visitors. Intermediate Consumption, Gross Surplus and Gross Value Added of the industry recorded respective growth of 23.9%, 73.6% and 38.2%. Meanwhile, Total Receipts of Manufacture of Cement & Concrete decreased by 10.1% year-on-year to MOP1.44 billion, owing to declining demand for cement and concrete in the market. Intermediate Consumption, Gross Surplus and Gross Value Added of the industry went down by 7.5%, 23.2% and 18.1% respectively. Total Receipts of Manufacturing not elsewhere classified amounted to MOP1.82 billion, with Manufacture ofWestern Medicine and Manufacture of Tobacco together accounting for 38.6% of the total.

Total Receipts of the Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector rose by 27.2% year-on-year to MOP4.49 billion due to increased electricity generation. Intermediate Consumption surged by 55.6% to MOP1.49 billion while Compensation of Employees decreased by 4.0% to MOP621 million. Gross Surplus and Gross Valued Added of the sector grew by 23.7% and 16.7% respectively year-on-year to MOP2.39 billion and MOP3.01 billion. Number of establishments stayed at 6, with number of persons engaged rising by 0.5% year-on-year to 1,128.

The Industrial Survey covers the Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sectors. In 2017, there was no active establishment in the Mining & Quarrying sector.
