The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today stressed the Government has been closely monitoring any possible impact on the nearby community caused by a new animal shelter in Coloane due to house retired greyhounds.
The Government would if necessary take enforcement action, should the owner of the dogs – Macao (Yut Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd – fail to act in line with Macao’s noise control regulations and the city’s Animal Protection Law.
Speaking to reporters prior to the Government’s reception to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Chui stressed the Government’s law enforcement effort was always impartial and just, regardless of whomever might be involved in acts of alleged infringement.
In addition, Mr Chui stressed the Government’s determination to ensure a normal daily life for people living near the new dog shelter in Coloane, particularly senior citizens at Instituto Canossiano Vila Madalena, a home for the elderly.
The Government always had concern for the lives of Macao’s senior citizens. The Chief Executive visited last week that particular home for the elderly, in order to canvass the opinion of the residents on the dog shelter issue.
The Government had approved a seven-day extension to the deadline by which Macao (Yut Yuen) Canidrome was required to rehouse its retired greyhounds. The former operator of dog racing in Macao had proposed moving the dogs from the now-closed Canidrome racing facility at Fai Chi Kei to a private site in Coloane. Under the new timetable, the dogs have to be rehoused on or before 6 October.
